EU Project

EU rules on gender balance for corporate boards are based on the recognition that increasing women’s labour market participation is essential to:

  • boost economic growth in Europe
  • improve the competitiveness of European companies
  • tackle demographic challenges in Europe

Enhancing women’s presence on company boards, and thus their participation in economic decision-making, is expected to have a positive spill-over effect on women’s employment in the companies concerned and throughout the whole economy.

However women are still vastly outnumbered by men in the boards of companies throughout the EU. This gender imbalance is particularly significant and acute in the private sector, especially in listed companies.

EU directives and laws seek to achieve more balanced representation of men and women on corporate boards.

While progress towards more equality in this area has been made, it remains slow and uneven across MS. It remains slow in Albania among the Regions

All EU countries have adopted requirements on Diversity disclosure. EU disclosure requirement about Board’s Diversity and selection criteria increase pressure for action now!

9 EU countries had adopted Diversity in their Corporate Governance codes. Albania can learn from best practices.

By 2026, 40% of non-executive corporate Board seats shall be held by women. Upskilling and creating the pool of next generation Board ready women is a harmonised and demanding process. Building the pipeline is urgent!

The “EU project” intends of approaching Albanian Diversity on Corporate Boards situation to what it takes to me member of the EU family.

This is a project that will require collaboration with multiple stakeholders, whereby WOB-Albana will contribute with it’s expertise to:

  • Create awareness
  • Engage experts to enhance perspectives, elevate engagement, and support upskilling
  • Creating networks to facilitate sharing and capacity building.
  • Contribute in increasing the number of companies operating in Albania that within ne next 5 years reflected Diversity requirements in their Governance Code and increased qualified women representation on quoted companies.

Digitalization Project

Economic growth in Albania will require a strategy of smart specialization. Whatever the selected sectors, digitalization shall be a horizontal sector that will boost our economy.
Developing ‘smart specialization” in innovative technologies of Albanian women with leadership and board acuity will boost both attractiveness of women participation on Boards and the positive impact on Board effectiveness and company performance.
This is a multidisciplinary project, that will be realized in collaboration with a broader ecosystem of stakeholders.
